About TEA ADMIN

Hey there! If you need assistance, please see our home page and menu to learn how to contact us.

Tea Rebellion is a social venture founded in 2017 by Annabel Kalmar who seeks to change the status quo in tea and to directly connect tea drinkers with tea growers.

Tea Rebellion set up a very distinct business on purpose; they import from six sustainable tea farms directly, pay a good price for their fine teas, always credit the source and never blend the teas! The venture has a mission to help tea drinkers train their palate for whole and complete tea.

Annabel has a background in agriculture and international development and worked in the field with farmers in El Salvador and the Dominican Republic, harvesting coffee and analyzing trade terms for banana farmers.

After an MBA, Annabel worked as a strategy consultant transforming things that don’t work. With a continued desire to help improve market access for smallholder farmers, Annabel noted that coffee and chocolate had gotten all the love from consumers who cared deeply about product origins. She wondered why most tea drinkers knew so little and drank lower quality, usually blended teas over decades?  Annabel felt, it was the perfect time to shake things up in this traditional industry and create a social enterprise to change how things work.

When Annabel arrived in Canada in Jan 2017 with a husband and three kids, it seemed the perfect time to launch a social venture. She studied to become a Tea Sommelier, researched the tea market, found transparent and sustainable partner farmers and launched Tea Rebellion in October 2017. The venture is now 13 months old!

What Annabel loves most about running this venture are the strong partnerships she is creating with her six tea farms. On a recent trip out to a partner farm, Kanhanjangha in Eastern Nepal, Annabel learnt about the day to day challenges of tea farming families. Inspired by this and in order to celebrate one year in business, Annabel and her friends Nishchal and Tracy launched a campaign to Keep Kids Safe and Close by funding a kindergarten & primary school for 30 kids and 12 families. To date, 48 supporters have helped to raise over half the funds needed and with few days remaining, contributors may choose organic high mountain teas from Kanchanjganha as a reward for contributing! The team is thrilled to start building soon and help make this change happen…
