In 2023, Camellia Sinensis will proudly celebrate its 25th anniversary. The Quebec-based company has over 55 dedicated employees, a network of nearly 100 artisans and offers more than 200 different teas at its three boutiques, on its website and at over 2,000 points of sale. Winner of seven international awards, this outstanding company can certainly feel proud when looking back on its rich and inspiring history.
History
For 25 years, the Camellia Sinensis team has been delivering success and innovation. Hugo Americi was inspired to start this wonderful enterprise when visiting Europe in 1997. In Prague, he discovered Asian-inspired tearooms and was instantly hooked.
In 1998, Camellia Sinensis opened its first tea house in Montreal. It was a huge success! Hugo Americi soon joined forces with three other co-owners: Jasmin Desharnais, François Marchand and Kevin Gascoyne. In 2001, the team opened a boutique and a tea school. The following years were marked by numerous trips to Europe, China, Japan, India, Vietnam and Taiwan. During these visits, the four owners forged long-lasting relationships with many tea producers.
In 2004, Camellia Sinensis opened a new tea house in the trendy Saint-Roch district of Quebec City. The company continued to grow, developing the art of aging Pu Er teas. In 2006, another tea store opened in Montreal’s Jean-Talon Market. Over the years, Camellia Sinensis has collaborated with chefs, mixologists and sommeliers on several occasions.
In 2014, Camellia Sinensis’s first book entitled Tea: History, Terroirs, Varieties won the award for Best Book on Tea at the World Tea Awards. It’s now available in five languages. In 2018, the Tea Studio was born in India, a unique project created in partnership with Indian and European partners. Run exclusively by women, it develops high-quality teas.
In 2022, the Camellia Sinensis flagship tea house on Emery Street in Montreal was reinvented. The entire space was remodelled to give it a sleek, modern feel. It now includes a tasting bar. Finally, the company will be moving its warehouse in 2023.
It's worth noting that over the last 25 years, the four owners have sampled over 17,000 teas to ensure their customers get nothing but the best.
Today
Considered a benchmark in its field, Camellia Sinensis receives and processes nearly 50,000 kilograms of tea from private imports every year. It also runs two training schools for hotel and restaurant professionals, regularly publishes tea books and leads workshops on a variety of subjects — 15,000 tea enthusiasts have taken part! Finally, some 500 restaurants around the world serve its teas to their customers.
Camellia Sinensis thanks its valued customers for their openness and loyalty over the years.
