While crafting boldly flavored all-natural teas is essential to While crafting boldly flavored all-natural teas is essential to Stash Tea Company’s purpose, the Portland-based specialty tea brand also works tirelessly to make a positive impact on the world. In September 2017, Stash Tea earned B Corp Certification for meeting the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability, publicly committing to balance profit and purpose as they continue to grow their business. Today, Stash Tea continues to implement these practices within the company to promote inclusivity and diversity in the workplace, while executing stronger sustainability methods in all aspects of the business.

“Stash Tea wants to empower and nurture a better tomorrow, where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed, no matter your gender, race, sexual preference, or nationality. We all have a voice and space to contribute to how we want our society to be. Stash sees different perspectives and backgrounds as something positive to be pursued, that makes us stronger and better, and I say that through personal experience," said Carla Marchese, Stash Tea’s brand manager. “Throughout history, tea has been a cultural catalyst. We want to continue in the same spirit, ensuring the diversity and boldness we apply in creating our tea flavors is also translated to how we contribute to our community.”

Stash Tea proudly celebrates inclusivity and diversity within the workplace and takes great care to ensure the well-being of their employees. Women take a strong, central role in the inner workings of Stash Tea, which consists of 60 percent female employees. The company is also led by female CEO Nami Yamamoto.

In addition to promoting diversity in the workplace, Stash Tea remains steadfast in its commitment to sustainability. Founded in 1972, Stash Tea was built on the philosophy of crafting unconventional teas while establishing a more sustainable economy through growing the best tea ingredients, a practice that still carries on today. Stash Tea sources green tea from their own gardens in Brazil, which allows Stash to more thoroughly control the quality of the production and hold their gardens to the highest standards, including implementing new farming techniques, reducing pesticide usage, streamlining supply chain process from tea to cup and supporting local employment in developing communities in Brazil.

Recently, Stash has continued to develop their sustainability initiatives by:

  • Decreasing the amount of material in their tea boxes by cutting paperboard usage by approximately 203.9 tons per year, which amounts to an 18 percent reduction in waste.
  • Giving the option for customers to “green” their order by paying a little extra during checkout to offset their package’s carbon footprint.
  • Using entirely compostable tea bags made from 100% cellulose fibers, consumers can rest easy that Stash Tea is free from microplastics.

Stash will also be participating in Giving Tuesday on December 3rd, partnering with their customers in a collaborative give-back effort during this high-traffic season. For every order placed, Stash will be donating $1 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. In addition, Stash will match the total donation amount in kind. Similar to Stash, the Boys & Girls Club of America believes in building the leaders of tomorrow. They work to enable young people to reach their full potential, having helped over 4.73 million youths in the last year by giving them access to empowering experiences and opportunities.

This Giving Tuesday charity drive follows similar efforts in the past for Stash Tea, where through customer and employee participation, Stash raised $3000 for the California Community Foundation Wildfire Relief and donated over 65,000 tea bags to Chico Natural Foods Co-op after the California wildfires in 2018.

Earlier this year, Stash Tea launched its latest campaign, “A Little Bag of Crazy,” which celebrates being bold and anchors tea at the center of creative moments, innovation and inspiration. Stash Tea seeks to change the modern tea drinking experience for today’s consumers, reminding consumers everywhere that life is best enjoyed with quirk, a little unconventionality and a dash of humor.
