Have you heard of Quilling, aka Paper Filigree?

Filigree papers are narrow strips of different colored papers.  Some are edged in gold or silver.  When the paper strips are rolled, folded, scrolled, or crimped, they create beautiful pieces of art.  The art of paper filigree originated with the church for religious pictorial ornamentations.  During the 18th Century schools taught the art of "Filigree".   The art was for refined young ladies of wealth.  Magazines published at the time printed patterns for creating flower petals, leaves, and other designs.  Besides pictorial artwork, paper filigree was used to decorate tea caddies, baskets, urns, and furniture.  Fine examples can be seen at several museums around the world.  In U.S. you can see filigree work on an 18th century tea caddy at the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, CT;  and a picture and sconces at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.  In Great Britain you can see filigree work at several museums as well.  Try the Victoria and Albert Museum in London for 4 tea caddies, a cabinet, and other pieces decorated with paper filigree.
