Have You Heard of The Red Hat Society?

Ever wonder who the women are that you sometimes see at your favorite tea room?—the ones wearing the red hats and purple dresses??..They are members of The Red Hat Society and their main focus is to have fun.

Individual chapters of The Red Hat Society are formed, and members decide what to do for fun.  The Red Hat Society is fondly referred to as a “disorganization”.  The only “suggested” rule is for women “50 and better” to wear red hats and purple outfits and for those “49-or-less, but still improving,” to wear pink hats and lavender outfits.

Chapter members often give themselves titles; some very grand, such as “Queen Mother”, others silly, like “Grape Tomato.”

We had the pleasure of interviewing a member (a.k.a. Grape Tomato) of The Uptown Girls chapter of The Red Hat Society located in Carlstadt, New Jersey.  Grape Tomato tells us that The Uptown Girls meet monthly and love afternoon tea, luncheons, and browsing through shops.  The Uptown Girls particularly enjoy the large gatherings involving other Red Hat Society chapters.  Grape Tomato says

they never have any “real meetings”; the chapter gets together strictly for fun outings.  Of the dress code, Grape Tomato says, “The hats and outfits are so diverse, each expressing the wearer—some very conservative, some quite flamboyant with feather boas, ruffled silk socks, and red parasols!  No two hats or outfits are ever alike!  All tasteful—according to your own definition, of course!”

Sounds like great fun to us!  If you would like to learn more about The Red Hat Society, or want to know how to join, go to www.redhatsociety.com.
