North American Tea Conference - Gold Medal Tea Competition - Winners From 10 Countries

Monday, October 24th 2016 @ 12:23 PM

The world’s only tea competition sponsored by the North American tea industry was recently held during the 7th annual North American Tea Conference in Niagara Falls, Canada. With more than 70 high quality teas examined from 10 producing countries, the competition was fierce. The tasting panel, consisting of six judges whose combined total of  tasting and buying experience is well over 150 years, sipped, slurped and savored a variety of excellent teas.

When it was all said and done, they selected their winners and were  pleased to announce the overall winner, a Green Tea from Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. This tea was a stellar example of the flavor, color and aroma of teas from the largest producing region in Japan. Special congratulations go to JA Shizuoka Keizairen Co. Ltd. for producing this wonderful  winning tea.

Endorsed and credentialed by the Tea Association of the U.S.A, Inc., the Tea Council of the U.S.A. and the Specialty Tea Institute, along with the Tea Association of Canada and the Tea Council of Canada, this competition saw some of the finest teas produced in the world today on display. The teas were judged on the following characteristics, leaf make: the dry leaf style and quality as a depiction of the grade; infused leaf: brightness (where appropriate), evenness and aroma; and, liquor: flavor, appropriate mouthfeel and balance.

The competition was divided by country, with many different styles of tea represented. Here is the list of producing country winners:
