Choose Fun in 2017 - Guest Post by Ruby RedHat, Red Hat Society

Friday, January 20th 2017 @ 9:03 PM

Happy New Year! Ruby RedHat here. If this is your first time reading my blog, please allow me to introduce myself. I am the official mascot of the Red Hat Society- one of the largest women’s social organizations in the world. Our wonderful Sisterhood connects like-minded women and enriches lives through the power of Fun and Friendship

Each year, the Red Hat Society chooses a new theme, and 2017’s theme is #ChooseFun. Why? Because, we believe that fun is a choice, just as living life to the fullest is.

Unfortunately, fun sometimes gets a bad rap. It’s all too often associated with superficiality, selfishness, foolishness, and flippancy. However, I would argue that there are a lot of benefits to making time for fun in your life, including: reduced stress, and increased creativity, endorphins and overall happiness.

In my years with the Red Hat Society, I’ve seen women’s lives completely transform when they chose to embrace fun and friendship. And because I’m a lead by example kind of gal, I like to engage in at least one fun activity per week… if not more!

This past week, I took a cooking class with some friends. We made French food, while listening to fun music and sharing some laughs. I not only got to enjoy a delicious meal with my girlfriends, but I learned some new cooking techniques and terms like: “mise en place”. It was a wonderful experience!

Of course, not every activity has to be as involved as this cooking class. I also enjoy a good game night, afternoon teas, picnics, museums, paint nights, and so much more. The awesome thing about fun, is your only limited by your imagination.

If you would like to see the benefits of fun in your life, I encourage you to join us in our mission to #ChooseFun in 2017.

You can learn more about the Red Hat Society by visiting our new and improved website: You can also follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to see how Hatters are choosing fun in 2017.

If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can become a Member and join us in New York City this February for our Hats in the City International Convention. I would love to see you in the Big Apple!

RUBY REDHAT is the official mascot of the Red Hat Society.  In the year 2000, a little lady named Ruby appeared, out of nowhere, on the computer screen of EQM Sue Ellen's daughter, Andrea (aka Princess Daughter). Princess Daughter was working on the first Red Hat Society website and when Ruby got wind of it, she just volunteered her services as a representative (mascot?) for the entire membership. Ruby had recently finished compiling her Top Ten (plus one) Rules for Living and she had a feeling that both she and her rules would be able to help the Red Hat Society clarify its members and its purpose to the world. We are all thrilled to have her represent the little girl inside all of us, who is ready and willing to come out and play again in every woman who invites her to do so.
