Ruby’s Corner
Hello! My name is Ruby RedHat, and I’m the official mascot of the Red Hat Society. I am a frisky, full-figured little lady, cleverly disguised as an adult.

I like to think I represent the spirit of the little girl who is alive and well in women everywhere, and I am delighted to share my monthly Ramblings with you.

This month, I would like to talk about my favorite subject: Travel!

It seems that Red Hatters just love to travel – and I am one of them.  We travel to Chapter and multi-Chapter events, make our way to conventions in some pretty super locations, go on cruises, and start planning for a next adventure before we’re home from the last one.  No grass growing under our feet!

I got to thinking that travel embodies all of the “F’s” in the Red Hat Society’s Passion Statement:

- FUN – There’s no doubt about that; we wouldn’t be traveling if it weren’t any fun.  We usually laugh when we travel together, and we DO know that laughter is good for us!

- FRIENDSHIP -  You might travel with an “old” friend (I prefer “vintage” actually) or meet a new one like our gutsy gals (solo traveler), but it’s best to travel with a friend or two, or more.  I love the story I heard one year of two Red Hatters who met at a convention and learned that they both wanted to go to Antarctica, but their husbands weren’t of the same mind?  So… they went without husbands, and had a great time.       - - FREEDOM – Hey, at our age we really embrace this one.

- FUFILLMENT -  What is on your “bucket list”?  Where have you always wanted to go – or return?  Maybe it’s San Francisco and I suggest you sign up for our next convention, which will be there (am I making a plug or what?).  Maybe you want to visit a friend you haven’t seen in years.  Start saving your coins and let the kids know you want CASH for your next birthday, for your travel fund.

 - FITNESS -  Keep on moving!  That’s what doctors are telling their “older” (vintage) patients, I’ve heard.  We need to be fit for travel and fit for sport, especially the Red Hat Society’s official sport – shopping.  Exercise somehow and keep a tote bag ready for your next shopping excursion.

Speaking of travel (and I told you in my last rambling that I would report back), I’ve just been on a girls-only road trip with RHS Founder  Sue Ellen, Esteemed Vice Mother Linda, and her sister.  Did we ever have fun (and no, I didn’t drive)!  We were in the beautiful Adirondacks in New York State, and worked out way to Cooperstown, NY (how fitting).  We meandered mountain roads through pine forests, stopped at lakes and camps, stopped whenever we felt like it, and NEVER ran out of things to talk and laugh about.   We saw some interesting signage along the way:  Custard’s Last Stand (of course we turned around for that one), Motel… Bikers’ Welcome (we stayed there), Dwarf’s Cottages (they WERE small but had No Vacancy), and Aunt Ruby’s Peanuts (ran out of time for that one).  We were silly (laughing in a dressing room for 2 hours while we tried on EVERYTHING) and serious (four hours in a fantastic art museum).  We are already talking about another trip next year – with Sue Ellen’s sister too.

How about you?  You know what I always say (and so does Gail)–JUST DO IT!

Oh! One more thing… Are you playing in the Red Hat Society yet? I would like to extend my red-gloved hand and invite you to join the fun today! Trust me, there’s nowhere else in this world where you can step into a room and feel the instant connection of Sisterhood and Friendship like you would at a Red Hat Society event. Visit to learn more about the Sisterhood, and don’t miss the incredible events coming up on our Save the Date page.

RUBY REDHAT is the official mascot of the Red Hat Society.  In the year 2000, a little lady named Ruby appeared, out of nowhere, on the computer screen of EQM Sue Ellen's daughter, Andrea (aka Princess Daughter). Princess Daughter was working on the first Red Hat Society website and when Ruby got wind of it, she just volunteered her services as a representative (mascot?) for the entire membership. Ruby had recently finished compiling her Top Ten (plus one) Rules for Living and she had a feeling that both she and her rules would be able to help the Red Hat Society clarify its members and its purpose to the world. We are all thrilled to have her represent the little girl inside all of us, who is ready and willing to come out and play again in every woman who invites her to do so.
