Coffee in Love with Tea? by Gail Gastelu

Friday, February 13th 2015 @ 10:43 AM

Oh can it be? As I write this, it is the day before Valentine’s Day and we just returned from exhibiting at Coffee Fest in Atlanta, Georgia, last weekend.  The timing of the show was just right for helping coffee people fall in love with tea this Valentine’s Day.  So, to make things fun, I handed out Valentine cards to many of our visitors at the show.  I must say that I was really -feeling the love- after spending three days exhibiting and teaching about tea.

So, is coffee ready to embrace tea? Yes! Yes! Yes! Following my two half-day presentations of Tea Course Fast Track, attendees came to visit me in my booth and of course I bumped into them a few times on the show floor as well. Hugs – I tell you – Hugs I received from these wonderful new friends who thoroughly enjoyed learning about our beautiful world of tea. They told me that they went away with so many ideas for adding tea to their business. They said TCFT should be required for anyone considering tea. They said that they now understand the great depth of tea knowledge that needs to be learned just as they experienced with coffee.  If they want to do it right, they need to educate their staff and employees and additionally teach their customers how to properly handle/store/steep their tea as well. A quality experience that starts in the shop will be carried through to a person’s home.

To further fuel the excitement, many of my students experienced a feeling of being at the forefront of tea’s expansion into coffee – and they will be a step ahead. We learned about tea, growth, manufacturing, tea for business, and also tasted and compared teas. Each student took home a tea tasting/cupping set along with a flash drive that I had previously filled with additional resources, eBooks, and educational handouts to share with their staff.  Also included were special offers from our continuing education at and our sponsors: and  They were also informed of all tea industry trade shows, associations, additional avenues for learning and so much more.  Oh don’t you worry, I shared plenty of love with/about others in the tea industry.

Adding to my excitement, I had a very special surprise visitor to my booth at Coffee Fest. If you are not already aware, The Tea House Times recently partnered with Select Registry distinctive inns across America. Most of these inns serve coffee and tea of course so it is a perfect relationship beneficial to the inns and anyone in coffee or tea business as well.  My special guest was Dan Abbott all the way from Port Angeles, Washington, one of the very first inns we featured in the Jan/Feb2015 issue of The Tea House Times. Dan and his wife Janet own George Washington Inn, an exterior reproduction of George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate (Virginia).  In February they celebrate George Washington’s Birthday with afternoon tea and a local re-enactor. It was wonderful to meet Dan and to share his enthusiasm for tea!

What are you doing for Valentine’s Day? I hope you enjoy a very special meal with a very special someone and end it with a spectacular cup of tea (or coffee :)   - - Sometime next week I hope to have my show recap completed and will share what I saw on the show floor at Coffee Fest and how tea is growing.  Until then, Happy Valentine’s Day!
