Top Tea to Grow this Month - Scented Pelargonium by Cassie Liversidge

Scented Pelargoniums (Pelargonium) are also called geraniums and originate from South Africa. I would encourage you to discover this plant if you haven’t done already, because there are so many incredible different scents and flavours, ranging from zesty lemon to rose and even cinnamon!


The early spring is a good time to buy your new pelargonium plants because you can buy small plants to grow on to harvest in the summer. If you live somewhere that experiences temperatures below 40ºF (5ºC), then you will need to bring your pelargoniums inside for the winter. They like a sunny position and an average temperature of 70ºF (21ºF) and free draining soil.


You will be able to harvest your pelargonium leaves in the summer. Fill the kettle with fresh water. Bring the water to a boil, then pour some into your teacup or teapot to warm it up. Discard the water. Put three or four fresh or dried pelargonium leaves and small parts of stalk into a tea bag or teapot. Tear the leaves into smaller pieces if they are large. Pour the boiled water (which should be between 176 to 185°F/80 to 85°C) over the tea and cover with a saucer or a lid. Allow the tea to steep for three to four minutes. (The leaves will discolor when the hot water is poured over them). Remove the tea bag or pour the tea from the teapot using a tea strainer and enjoy. You can also add a pelargonium flower before serving. The flavor will depend upon your type of pelargonium, but whichever you choose it will be a flavorsome and relaxing drink.
