Top Tea to Harvest this Month - Myrtle by Cassie Liversidge

Monday, December 1st 2014 @ 11:38 AM

Myrtle (Mrytus communis) is an evergreen shrub that has white flowers in the summer, followed by a profusion of glossy black berries in the winter. The leaves contain essential oils that are believed to be anti-inflammatory and antibacterial.

Native to the Mediterranean, it likes full sun and well-drained soil to thrive and needs protection if temperatures drop below 5 degrees Fahrenheit (-15C). During these winter months though, it produces wonderful berries that can be used alongside the leaves to make warming and aromatic tea.

Tear up a few fresh leaves and five or six berries into a teabag or teapot and pour on boiled water. Infuse for three or four minutes then remove the teabag or pour from the teapot using a tea strainer. You can make a decoction (instructions on last months rosehip blog post) if you prefer a stronger tasting tea.
