COFFEE AND TEA FSMA ALERT - 2 hour class 7/20 at The Lab at Royal New York

Monday, July 17th 2017 @ 12:57 PM

In 2011, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted research exploring how many people were affected by foodborne illnesses a year. The results – an estimated 48 million people contracted an illness, 128,000 of which were hospitalized and 3,000 died from an affliction – were alarming and illuminated the need for food safety reform.

In response, former President Barack Obama signed into law the FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), the most sweeping reform of U.S. food safety laws in more than 70 years.

While compliance deadlines vary, the cutoff for small businesses – September 18, 2017 – is rapidly approaching. To help its coffee and tea customers navigate the law and identify rules that apply to their business, ROYAL New York (RNY) is hosting a free introductory course on the FSMA that will cover everything from establishing a food safety plan to how to become a preventative control qualified individual (PCQI).

“At ROYAL NY, we place a supreme emphasis on customer service and seek out ways to cultivate an environment of good will and personalized relationships with our customers,” says Ravi Kroesen, director of tea operations at ROYAL New York and certified PCQI. “As the FSMA is a challenging law to understand, we’re eager to help our customers better understand its nuances so that they can effectively prepare, reduce risks, control costs and ensure everyday compliance.”

The two-hour class for coffee and tea businesses, held at RNY’s The Lab, will take place on Thursday, July 20th beginning at 1 PM and is available for registration at www.royalnylab.com. The Lab is RNY’s state-of-the-art coffee and tea education center, a facility that conducts green buying, cupping, barista, and roasting classes. The Lab serves to educate the specialty coffee and tea community and enhance the quality assurance of RNY’s coffee supply.
