The boutique will be open to the public April 27, 28, 29 and May 1, 2 and 3 from 11am to 6pm. A special VIP and press preview will be held Thursday evening, April 27 from 5 to 6pm.
Harshita Lohia was born and raised in Kolkata, India, and is a 6th generation descendent of a renowned Chamong tea family. She enrolled at Moore College of Art + Design in Philadelphia in 1998. After finishing her bachelor of fine arts degree in textile design, Harshita completed her master’s degree in digital printing at Philadelphia University. In 2005, she established Harshita Designs to realize her dream of creating original textiles and accessories. Her brilliant collections represent her rich heritage and her sensitive way of blending east and west. Harshita has been featured in the shops of many museums including the Museum of Art and Design in NYC, the Asia Society in NYC, the Newark Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, the Textile Museum in Washington, DC, and the Barnes Foundation.
In addition to the Pop-Up Boutique, Harshita has agreed to participate in two special events at the PAA. On Sunday, April 29 at 2pm, her husband Mayank Bansal will lead a presentation on the craft of tea, drawing on the Chamong family’s long history of growing and exporting fine teas in Darjeeling. At this event, Gail Gastelu, Publisher of The Tea House Times, will offer a presentation on the history of afternoon tea and the art of preparing tea at home. “The Craft of Tea” is $15 for the public and $5 for members of the PAA.
On Tuesday, May 2 at 6pm, the Philadelphia Art Alliance will present “So You Want to Be an Entrepreneur,” featuring a presentation by Harshita Lohia followed by a conversation between Harshita and renowned fiber artist Lewis Knauss, a former professor of textile design at Moore College of Art + Design. This event is part of the Philadelphia Art Alliance’s ongoing series “Craft & Culture,” which is generously supported the Dolflinger-McMahon Foundation.
Founded in 1915, the Philadelphia Art Alliance is dedicated to the advancement and appreciation of innovative contemporary art with a focus on craft and design, and to inspiring dynamic interactions between audiences and artists in a setting of historic and aesthetic significance.
