Las Vegas Tea Conference Focuses on Being a Carbon Neutral, Zero Waste Show with Its 'Green' Partner, Fair Trade USA, and the Help of Repurpose AMERICA
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (June 21, 2011) --- World Tea Expo, the largest and most prominent event for the tea industry, is partnering with Fair Trade USA, the leading third-party certifier of Fair Trade products in the United States, to make its 2011 convention in Las Vegas, June 24 - 26, a "green" event.
To ensure an environmentally-responsible convention for the specialty tea industry, World Tea Expo and Fair Trade USA are working with Repurpose AMERICA, who coordinates with the Las Vegas Convention Center and related vendors to reduce landfill waste from the Expo to a minimum, if not zero. This includes recycling of all vinyl banners, foam core signs, unused exhibitor promotional items, printed materials and more. Many of the non-recyclable and unwanted articles are utilized in community and environmentally-beneficial programs. The majority of Repurpose AMERICA staff is veterans and individuals with disabilities, who have traditionally struggled to find employment.
"I think it's a natural fit for us to partner as a 2011 'Green' partner at World Tea Expo, to bring sustainable solutions within the tea industry," says Paul Rice, president and CEO of Fair Trade USA. "This effort makes a positive impact in people's lives and the environment, which is similar to how Fair Trade standards work on farms in the developing world. And we're proud to be the first-ever partner for this important initiative. We look forward to seeing all the 'greening' efforts in action at the Expo, leaving a positive footprint in the local community."
George Jage, president and founder of World Tea Media, organizer of World Tea Expo, says, "In our continuing effort to reduce the carbon footprint and 'green' World Tea Expo, we are proud to have partnered with Fair Trade USA, to take another major step towards this goal. Through their purposeful contribution, we are able to fund these efforts and remove nearly all the non-recyclable waste from the Expo. We thank Fair Trade USA, their member companies, the retailers supporting them and the consumers whose conscious choice is making the difference in the world."
Each year, Las Vegas hosts approximately 20,000 meetings and conventions with more than five million people attending, making the city the ultimate meeting destination. Increasingly, the convention industry - and supporters like World Tea Expo and Fair Trade USA - has sought to recycle materials, reduce waste and help protect the environment whenever possible.
World Tea Expo and Fair Trade USA support Repurpose AMERICA, which has helped more than 300 conventions reduce their carbon footprints. Their services have diverted millions of non-recyclable waste and benefited more than 100,000 individuals, and the company has been an important part of the environmental fabric and sustainability of Southern Nevada.
