Celebrating Mothers at Sonnenberg

Special Mother’s Tea offered Opening Day, Sat. May 10

plus “Dollar Day” admission on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11!

CANANDAIGUA, NY – What better way to celebrate Mom than a special outing to Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park on Saturday, May 10, when the 2008 Garden Season begins? Mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters and friends are invited to enjoy a lovely afternoon tea of sandwiches, scones, and sweets, served in the Mansion by costumed Victorian maids.

Tickets for the tea are $20 for adults, $17.50 for Sonnenberg members or groups of 10 or more and $12 for children ages 4-12. Specialty raffles will also be offered during teatime. Advance reservations are strongly suggested as our teas have limited capacity and often sell out. While our 1 p.m. serving time is nearly filled, there is still plenty of room for the 3 p.m. seating. Reservations can be made at (585) 394-4922, and advance payment is encouraged. Tickets for the tea include admission to Sonnenberg’s nine formal gardens, greenhouse conservatory complex and the 1887 Queen Anne-style Mansion, once home for New York City bank financier Frederick Ferris Thompson and his wife, philanthropist Mary Clark Thompson.

Then on Sunday, May 11, all mothers enjoy $1 admission to the estate (a $9 savings!) with a special “Dollar Day” entry in honor of Mother’s Day. Gates open at 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Enjoy strolls through Sonnenberg’s nine formal gardens, now bursting with the blossom of spring, walk through our greenhouse and conservatory complex, and visit the Sonnenberg Gift Shop, High Noon Café or Finger Lakes Wine Center.  Daily admission for those accompanying mom is $10 per person, $9 for AAA members or seniors ages 60 +, $5 for students 13 -18 or those with valid college ID; and free to Sonnenberg members or children 12 and under.

Sonnenberg is located at 151 Charlotte St., Canandaigua, minutes from Canandaigua Lake.

Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion, State Historic Park

151 Charlotte St., Canandaigua, NY 14424   www.sonnenberg.org

Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park is one of America’s longest surviving estates from the Victorian Era. The elegant Queen Anne-style mansion was built in 1887 in Canandaigua by New York City financier Frederick Ferris Thompson, and his wife, Mary Clark Thompson, as a summer home. Between 1901 and 1920, the widowed Mrs. Thompson and her staff created the nine formal gardens seen today. The grounds are open to the public from mid-May through early October each year. Sonnenberg is a non-profit organization dependent upon the support of members and sponsors and its dedicated corps of volunteers. For more information on the revival of the grand estate on the “sunny hill,” contact Marketing & Development Manager Doug Kane at (585) 396-7433.

Blue Hydrangea Tea Party TM is a fundraising vehicle for ovarian cancer awareness.  Blue Hydrangea Tea Party coordinates a network of tea parties across the country to benefit ovarian cancer awareness and/or research.  They have links to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance at their website…Through their respective websites, Blue Hydrangea Tea Party hostesses can find local agencies in their areas to support through the donations that come from their party guests.  If they have a hospital in their area that does research specifically for ovarian cancer cures, treatments, etc., then they are welcomed to choose that option.  If they have trouble finding a local agency to support, BHTP can assist them.  Party registrations can also be taken over the phone at 1-803-699-5534…… Blue Hydrangea Tea Parties are held on the Saturday before Mothers’ Day each year, but women are encouraged to include BHTP in their planning when organizing group functions which may not fall on that day (i.e. regularly occurring meetings during the week).  There is a simple 3 step process-

1)      register your party

2)      host a party in your own special style and ask your guests to make donations to your chosen ovarian cancer agency -donations should be made in the form of a check made out to the agency you have chosen to be the beneficiary of your party, with the words “Blue Hydrangea Tea Party” written on the memo line at the bottom of the check

3)      total the donations you receive, mail them to the agency you have chosen to receive them, and let BHTP know your total and the agency that received them

**Remember that each guest’s cancelled check is their receipt for tax purposes**

Blue Hydrangea Tea Party hopes to become the unifying force that will put ovarian cancer in a higher national profile.  For more information, visit www.bluehydrangeateaparty.org. Printable Blue Hydrangea Tea Party Invitations at the website!

Kimberly Shaw Graphics (another one of our very fine advertisers) offers some suggestions for invitations:  Working with fundraising organizations has been fun for us, says Steve Shaw.  The charities usually have a major event and need to send out invitations to potential donors or attendees.  Others have a no-tea, tea event or also is termed a phantom tea.  They use our teacup cards with their custom messages and mail out to their customer base.  To keep costs down, we try to print these cards when we print our other new designs.  They can get a nice, custom event card for just the cost of design fees and  the wholesale cost of our cards.  Visit www.kimberlyshawgraphics.com for contact details.
